Revolutionary musings

I promise, this is going to be my last health-related post for a little while.

I've been to the doc's and apparently it was just a simple infection, or tonsillitis, or the 'kissing disease' or something. But basically I survived, and unless it keeps happening there's nothing to worry about! Lovely.

In addition to which, I'm the right weight for my height, my blood pressure's fine, and I don't have diabetes. Good for me! (Although perhaps I shouldn't be pigging out on peanut m&m's in celebration? Never mind.)

I've been talking to a friend about politics, and changing the world, and homelessness and everything. I want to change the world. I believe it can be done. Furthermore, I believe it SHOULD be done, since I'm one of the few with the power and the inclination to kick up a fuss. But where do I start? Do I just donate £2 a month to the good cause of my choice? Do I turn up at marches and protest everything going?

I'm still finding my way, but don't let me use that as an excuse. I should be starting NOW.

  1. Nice to hear you’re better and that you’re fitting in :D

So you want to make a difference huh? Well being the pessimistic, dull and boring guy I am I was going to say something along the lines of “not even worth trying, make the most of what you’ve got before it’s too late” but your post was in such high sprites that doing that didn’t feel like a reasonable response.

    ....so....

You could go down the evil genius route (I think you’d make a good evil genius btw) alternatively (and probably least likely to get you in trouble) would be to find something that you’re truly passionate about and concentrate on that be it global warming, deforestation, nuclear weapon disarmament (though Mr Bush is making a balls up of that already so I think that’s best left to your friends across the pond) poor and/or starving children/adults around the world (don’t forget those nearer to home first). I could go on but I’ll spare you the list of things wrong with the world.

The only thing I hope is that you, being religious and of sane mind (I’m sure people might disagree there) don’t use it as an opportunity to try convert every person you see walking around but you use your faith to help yourself to help people, let them make their mind up who/what to follow, just help and do the right thing. If people like what they see they will follow in there own time.... I don’t mean that in a mean way at all, you know that ^__^ anyway.... I’m going to go leave you alone now, these comment is tooo long as it is.

  2. Politics, huh?

Best news this week? California banned subdermal tagging of employees http://www.arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070904-california-outlaws-forced-rfid-tagging-of-humans.html . It got me thinking though. The fact that people even WANT to tag their employees is sickening beyond all belief.

It seems likely that the day will come where every citizen has to be tagged, numbered like cattle. Where every person is under suspicion. We're seeing it already - the UK government is proposing a database with the DNA of EVERY person in it. They're also pushing hard for ID cards.

ID cards in themselves aren't bad; it's that it's the thin end of the wedge that could conceivably see every person being tagged. A chip under your skin that stores information about you. Being stopped on street corners and forced to identify yourself. A draconian society with people treated with suspicion and contempt by the government they have elected to protect and to serve them.

The Bible talks about the last days of human civilisation, where everyone is marked with a "mark of the beast". I gotta be honest, with that in mind, RFID implants is unbelievably chilling to me. It's hard for me to even write this because it scares me so much I feel sick. Even if I didn't believe that, it would still make my blood run cold.

Some of the problems with making laws about identity:
    * The people who are the real problem (fraudsters, terrorists etc) DON'T OBEY THE LAW ANYWAY! Everyone else suffers
    * Most databases get hacked at some point. Imagine a database with EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU on it falling into fraudster hands
    * We are under enough suspicion already. Do you want to live in a more paranoid society?

So what can we do? Find out:

  3. I've never been quite as certain as you that ID cards are evil, Gavin, but it's something I need to look into.

Thanks for the opinions and the links, people, I'll get back to you on what I find x x

Peanut m&ms sound yummy but I prefer the peanut butter ones.
