What makes you free?

If you were snatched up from wherever you are and dropped in an infinite featureless plain, would you technically be imprisoned?

Think about that for a second.

What if there was stuff on this plain, trees and such. Is it still a prison? If so, what makes it so?

Maybe it's prison when you can't get home... but then you can be imprisoned in your home. Maybe it's a prison when you can't get where you want to be. I'd feel trapped if I couldn't travel to my home or to Cardiff. Or to beatboxing events. You know what, the sooner my NUS student card comes through, the better - I'll get rail discounts, which apparently in my head equates to more freedom.

What makes you free? Would would count as a prison to you?

ITOTD: I could spend hours doing this.

  1. I know you posted it ages ago but thought I’d comment as no one else did :P

    “What makes you free?”

My freedom is being able to do what I want, when I want to do it.... something that doesn’t happen that much

“What (?) would count as a prison to you?”

My prison would be anything that stops me from doing what makes me free. work, college/school (when I attended), money, rules, people in high places.... scrap the high places bit, people in general.

  2. Thanks! Good to hear from you :)

I think your definition is the best I'm going to find. Freedom sounds a lot less grand and important when you realise it just means 'doing whatever you want'.

On the other hand, I'm currently doing what I want in procrastinating writing an essay, and yet this habit imprisons me more than anything else, because what I REALLY want to do, is change.

  3. Freedom sound very inferior until you lack it. As soon as you loss your freedom it becomes grand beyond all conceivable idea.

Imagine for instance being in jail... not being able to go lay in the middle of the grassy field outside your steel bar striped window.... It certainly sounds impressive now, no? What about if you are wheelchair bound and all you want to do is to use the stairs instead of the ramp?

I guess your procrastinating isn’t what you truly want to do, only a runner up price, its not true freedom. You aren’t doing what you truly want to do. Thats why it imprisons you more.... I dont think changing is what you really want to do either, its not going to make you free, only imprison you in a world of keeping the changes up.

I bet you really want to be with your boyfriend rather than sitting there either writing your essay or procrastinating? What’s stopping you, whats holding you back? school/education, money?

Do you have relevant / irrelevant things to say? I thought so. Comment!
