A brief history of light

Gen 1:1 In the beginning, when God created the universe,
Gen 1:2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God was moving over the water.
Gen 1:3 Then God commanded, "Let there be light"---and light appeared.
Gen 1:4 God was pleased with what he saw. Then he separated the light from the darkness,
Gen 1:5 and he named the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." Evening passed and morning came---that was the first day.

This is the first mention of light in the Bible. It's good, and it's separate from darkness. These meanings of the word light are used throughout the Bible, and it set me thinking. I'm supposed to be walking in the light, but I don't act like it. I'm supposed to be visible in the darkness, but I don't feel like it. However, there is... a spark, I suppose.

I've always visualised my faith as a flame. Sometimes bright and sometimes flickering but always there. Right now, I'm hoping to burn brighter in the coming few weeks - living in the light.

Prayers and encouragement would be so much appreciated!

Pro 13:9 The righteous are like a light shining brightly; the wicked are like a lamp flickering out.

Mat 5:14 "You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.
Mat 5:15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house.
Mat 5:16 In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.

Joh 1:4 The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to people.
Joh 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.

Joh 3:19 This is how the judgment works: the light has come into the world, but people love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil.
Joh 3:20 Those who do evil things hate the light and will not come to the light, because they do not want their evil deeds to be shown up.
Joh 3:21 But those who do what is true come to the light in order that the light may show that what they did was in obedience to God.

Joh 8:12 Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. "I am the light of the world," he said. "Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness."

2Co 4:6 The God who said, "Out of darkness the light shall shine!" is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts, to bring us the knowledge of God's glory shining in the face of Christ.

1Th 5:5 All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

  2. Oooo talk of god and the bible, yay!

I’ve been watching loads of videos on youtube about creationism/intelligent design, both peoples personal views and clips from documentaries/TV shows and.... I was wondering if you’d just share your views on this with me... cos im nosey but also interested in other peoples views of the world.

Do you believe in Charles Darwin theory of evolution ? have you somehow worked that into your belief in god (which I think is totally possible by the way, along with any other scientific theory that might contradict the bibles teachings, many of the great scientist were/are religious) or do you perceive that to be made up nonsense as I do when it comes to the book of genesis or any other part of the bible looking to explain the origin of life.

I'm not looking for arguments or anything, just looking for different peoples views... its something that I find very interesting. I’m not going to try to change people’s views, snigger and laugh, insult and ridicule.... just want to find out what other people think and how people see the world around them.

Also in a more related topic to your post....

“Gen 1:4 God was pleased with what he saw. Then he separated the light from the darkness,”

I'm wondering what your interoperation of this is.... as it has been scientifically proven that dark is the absence of light that statement can’t be referring to the physical forms of light and dark, Dark can’t exist in the presence of light. Is it meant to be more of a moral sense of light and dark, good and bad, right or wrong ??

Anyway, I know I’ve gone on A LOT so I’m going to shut up lol... anyone that wants to answer, please feel free as I know Anna has some amazingly cool people read her blog so tell me what ya think, if you don’t want to tell me then by all means just ignore this post but lets not make it into a fight, k ?

  3. Epic comment :)

Re: evolution. Creationism vs Darwinism is largely irrelevant to my faith. Personally, I believe in survival of the fittest, but I've seen no evidence for one species evolving into another. If I'm proven wrong, so be it, my God is bigger than that.

I think if you understand the Genesis creation story as a story that contains truths about humanity, it makes a lot of sense. Again, whether it's historically accurate is largely irrelevant. I'm not saying it's not true, even.

Regarging the light thing. As with anything in the Bible, there is a deep metaphorical side to it, such as the good / evil thing that this post maybe highlights. However, when you say "it has been scientifically proven", whose science are you talking about there? Science is just our word for what we observe about existence; an existence that God created :) he made the laws of physics, so a) he understands them better than we ever will, and b) he's able to lean on them to produce things that appear miraculous to us.

Hope this all makes sense, and don't worry, my readers don't fight, they're lovely and intelligent people :)

  4. It does make sense and its nice to know that there are groups of people willing to talk about it all and not get all protective and such over there beliefs. I think people like that must have a underlying nervousness that the other side might be right and they are going about there whole life in the wrong manner, people that are willing to chat and debate are, in my experience, the most faithful to what they believe and aren’t scared to be questioned as they know in there heart that what they believe is the best way to live for them.

So in that light I’m going to say that I'm unsure about your “it has been scientifically proven” part... not believing in a god as I do I’m talking about my science, our science, the science of the human race. Science basically means knowledge, right ? So I’m talking about human knowledge. Not predictions, faith, guess work but proven laws and theories that can be tested over and over and only one result will be produced.... The laws of motion, law of conservation of matter, law of gravity. No matter how many times you were to test that it wouldn’t happen, light and dark (in a physical sense) can’t co insist at the same time and the same place.

“I've seen no evidence for one species evolving into another.”

There are many examples of transitional species with fossilised evidence to prove and back up the theory. Probably the most known being Archaeopteryx, it was first discovered in 1860-something... don’t know the exact date but it has feathered wings much like a modern-day bird with the ability to fly but has more resemblance to small bipedal dinosaurs, features like three clawed “fingers”, jaws with sharp teeth and a bony tail. There are a few more in the Reptiles to Bird line but can’t be bothered to write about them and try to remember how to spell names haha. There is even more evidence when it comes to land-living mammals to whales, fossils showing the ever decreasing size of hind limbs and the slow movement of nasal passages up the skull in whale species. Modern-day whales still have the remains of the bone structure that would have made hind limbs as they are a base for the genitalia muscles. It has also been observed (and recorded) that it isn’t uncommon for DNA to mutate and take a “evolutionary back track” causing whales be born with miniature legs... this “evolutionary back track” happens all over the animal kingdom not just in whales. Chimpanzees have 24 pairs of Chromosomes humans have 23... we aren’t missing one pair, its still there, its just fused onto the end of another. Chromosomes have areas at the end that protects them from damage, in the human chromosome 2 there is this end pattern in the middle, clearly showing that the chromosome was once two, when the DNA sequence in human chromosome 2 is compared to that of a chimpanzee it was found that its near-identical but just over two pairs of chromosomes not one. Strong evidence of a common ancestral link.
